Gumbohead Concert

Last night, we joined our neighbors at the first of the free concerts at the Botanical Garden for this summer.  Here in St. Louis, you can attend a free concert every night of the week during the summer.  The History Museum, Botanical Garden, Zoo, and local parks all host them each week.

This was our first time seeing Gumbohead in concert, but our neighbors have been trying to get us to go watch them for a while.  The band's website describes them as a zydeco, jazz, blues, and funk band influenced by New Orleans and South Louisiana music.  They've opened for the Neville Brothers and several other legendary Louisiana musicians.  We loved them!

I have to admit, I got pretty excited when I saw that one of the members was playing the washboard!

More than 6,000 people attended last night.

All of the outdoor concerts allow you to bring your own food and drink to the site.  It was a great atmosphere with all of the picnics set up throughout the Botanical Garden.  Tony made some delicious BBQ chicken shish ka bobs for all of us to share for dinner.  He was trying to figure out how to carry them, so he ended up wrapping them in tin foil and slipping them into an envelope!  We also brought cantaloupe and brownies to share.

The concert lasted about 2.5 hours with the band playing both original songs and covers.

This was a great event!  We will definitely be going again!  We also have plans to see Gumbohead at one of their monthly concerts downtown.  It was great to hear the sounds of South Louisiana!  While we were leaving, we also ran into a couple that we first met a few weeks ago at the LSU crawfish boil!  Gotta love the Louisiana experience!
